AHS students make a declaration of fashion

Allen High School students N'keyah Mitchell and Miranda Sexton are far from last season's fashion don'ts. The two were selected from more than 100 applicants for the second-annual Fashion Camp at the Galleria Dallas. The mall is responsible for choosing 60 girls and boys in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to be accepted into Fashion Camp.Mitchell, a junior at AHS, said she first discovered her passion for the fashion industry when she was in fourth grade. After receiving a project in art class to design a costume, Mitchell said she knew she wanted to pursuit a career in fashion. With the support of her parents, Mitchell has continued to feed her interest. It was her mother, Nichollette Mitchell, who received an e-mail regarding the camp and suggested that her daughter apply. Mitchell has taken sewing classes for two years and wants to attend Parsons the New School of Design in New York City after she graduates high school.

The 24-7 Life of School Supplies

(ARA) - Just as work creeps into all aspects of adult life, a kid's school day is no longer just 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. With today's fast-paced lifestyles, notebooks, binders and school products aren't confined to the classroom, and homework isn't always done sitting at the kitchen table. "Today's kids are so much on the go that their school supplies have evolved into lifestyle products with multiple functions for different times of the day," says Brian Effer, MeadWestvaco marketing communication manager. "They want a way to organize their notes and homework during the day, but within the same product, they're also looking for on-the-go writing surfaces and places to store their MP3 players."To successfully meet the needs of this demanding group, Effer says today's school supplies have to offer flexibility and the opportunity to customize organization with fashion and fun mixed in for good measure.

Romney Ignores Blessings of New York's Immigrants: Amity Shlaes

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Mitt Romney is working hard to surpass his presidential campaign competitor, Rudy Giuliani, in displays of concern over illegal immigration.

Romney recently spoke negatively of cities that provide schooling and funds to illegal immigrants, and said that during Giuliani's days as mayor, ``New York City was the poster child for sanctuary cities in the country and I think that's the wrong way to go.''

What's going on?

Romney and Giuliani have been running a race to the right on immigration. And their opponent from Arizona, Senator John McCain, is watching his campaign collapse around him, in good part because of his own effort to pass a reasonable immigration law earlier this year. But just because what Romney says is fashionable doesn't mean that it makes sense.

Culture industries to generate employment and income

17 August, 2007 - Youth unemployment is one of the major concerns that the country is grappling with today. Despite several government initiatives, like encouraging school leavers to take up vocational training and providing collateral free loans for students completing vocational trainings, for self-employment, the rate of youth unemployment has only been increasing over the years.

The issue caught the attention of the United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP), which has come up with yet another solution.

The government and UNDP will work closely to promote culture-based industries in Bhutan to ensure equitable and inclusive growth throughout the country.

Culture industries are income-generating initiatives based on activities such as handicrafts, textiles, music and dance, oral traditions, design and fashion.

Fall into school fashions

Editor's note: Kelly Owens is studying fashion design and merchandising at Drexel University in Philadelphia. We asked her to dig through the mountain of back-to-school fashion catalogs and news releases and give her picks for what fashions make the grade.

The mantra for back-to-school fashions this fall is "mix and match," with lots of layers and a preppy twist.

Plaid, layers, rugby polos, sweater vests and hoodies are trends that both boys and girls can follow.

Plaid is the hot pattern for the season. It can be found in button-up tops, polos, shorts and skirts for girls. Sensible dressers will avoid plaid overkill and stick to one plaid piece per ensemble.

For a quick plaid fix, girls can use plaid accessories, like shoes, headbands and jewelry.
